You don't actually need to use SSH for remote nREPL connections. I'm figuring out how to pass ssh user and ssh-port for nrepl--ssh-tunnel-command, is there easy way for this? The only reason for direct connection not to be attempted is to have the host nil. Then the game sits there, not frozen, but not loading any more for probably 10 minutes or so, sometimes long enough for the round to be over and intermission again. You are not logged in. The direct-connect fallback looks at tramp-current-host, which is nil. That is, when I invoke cider-connect, I am asked for a host, but after that it automatically tries to setup a tramp/ssh tunnel, which is not what I want.
This was the source of our confusion; it's not ssh tunnel, but tramp shell connection. With your [email protected] username the direct connection is actually tried, see the messages. At CIDER side the only thing we can do is to implement additional options to cider-known-hosts so that you can explicetely prohibit port lookup on selected remotes. Now it's "mandatory" for cider-connect as well as this is the most common user pattern.
