If the file's not listed, then Security Essentials isn't running, and your best option is to reinstall the latest version of Security Essentials from the Microsoft website (link in Resources). Unfortunately on the XP computer I am using to examine the files I had bumped the MSE version back to the previous one that didn't change the System Tray icon colour, It alerts you as to the status of the application.
