Astro Algebra is one of six titles in Edmark's Mighty Math Series, a comprehensive line of math software for Kindergarten through ninth grade. In Astro Algebra, twelve- to fourteen-year-olds captain a ship and aid a bizarre assortment of aliens by completing algebra-related missions. Astro Algebra and its companion program, Cosmic Geometry, cover major topics in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grade math curricula.
In elementary school, "manipulatives" such as blocks and counters are used to foster children's concrete understanding of math. At the middle school level, math instruction becomes increasingly abstract, leaving many students confused and unable to grasp the basic geometry and algebra concepts they will need to succeed in high school and beyond. Many of the activities in Astro Algebra contain Virtual Manipulatives, a unique technology that uses the computer to help students make the connection between concrete and abstract mathematics. For example, at the VariaBlox station, students can "stich" together a Blox representing two like terms, such as x squared and 3x squared, producing the result 4x squared.
Dozens of content-rich missions and hundreds of algebra problems provide hours and hours of math learning and fun. Astro Algebra introduces and reinforces algebra and pre-algebra concepts including negative integers, equivalent expressions, ratio and proportions, exponential notatino, variables, inverse operations, and solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities. As Students learn and succeed, a unique Gro Slide advances automatically, offering more challenging problems. You can also set the Grow Slide for practice in a specific Algebra topic. Both On-Duty ("Question & Answer") and Off-Duty ("Explore") activites are available to ensure that students experience both directed and self-directed learning.
Our Goal is to place the very best educational software in the hands of young people, providing the consistent qualtiy that parents have come to expect from Edmark. During the development of this program, we have listened to teachers, parents and students. We would really like the opportunity to listen to you as well. Please drop us a line or visit our Wev site (www.edmark.com) to share your thoughts and suggestions, and join us in helping ignite the curious mind.
